ABOUT THE BOOK
Shadow and Bone is the high-stakes debut novel by Leigh Bardugo that launched the globally acclaimed Grishaverse. Set in a world heavily inspired by the aesthetics, culture, and folklore of Imperial Russia, the story follows Alina Starkov, an orphaned mapmaker in the First Army of the nation of Ravka.
Ravka is a land literally divided by the Shadow Fold—a swath of near-impenetrable darkness teeming with flesh-eating monsters called Volcra. During a disastrous crossing of the Fold, Alina unleashes a dormant power she never knew she possessed: the ability to summon pure sunlight. This reveals her as the Sun Summoner, a figure of legend and the only hope for destroying the Fold. She is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the charismatic and mysterious Darkling. However, as Alina navigates the luxuries and lethal politics of the palace, she discovers that power is addictive and that in a world of shadows, light can be the most dangerous thing of all.
