The book challenges the popular narrative of Buddhism as a purely reactionary or isolated movement, instead arguing that it evolved through a deep and continuous dialogue with the prevailing Brahmanical (early Hindu) framework. Biswas meticulously examines how Buddhist thought integrated and reinterpreted core Brahmanical concepts—such as the laws of Karma, the structure of the cosmos, and the practice of Yoga—transforming them into tools for the realization of Nirvana while maintaining a distinct philosophical identity.

The narrative focuses on the transition from the early ascetic teachings of the Buddha to the more ritualistic and iconographic developments of later Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Biswas highlights how Vedic deities like Indra and Brahma were absorbed into the Buddhist pantheon as protectors of the Dharma, and how Brahmanical sacrificial rituals were sublimated into internal meditative practices. By analyzing archaeological evidence, epigraphs, and textual sources from both traditions, the book illustrates the "middle ground" where these two paths blurred, ultimately contributing to the unique synthesis that defined the cultural and religious landscape of medieval India and Southeast Asia.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Sampa Biswas is a distinguished scholar of ancient Indian history and religious studies, recognized for her nuanced approach to the evolution of socio-religious institutions. A legend of Hindi cinema, Gulzar is among the Subcontinent’s finest poets and lyricists, whose songs have touched millions. He remains as popular today and as sensitive a chronicler of our emotions, as he was half a century ago. And throughout, his work has been gloriously distinctive—especially for the unforgettable images and the intimacy he brings to his songs. In this book of conversations with the acclaimed author and documentary filmmaker Nasreen Munni Kabir, Gulzar speaks about the making of his most enduring songs—from ‘Mora gora ang lai le’ (Bandini; 1963) and ‘Dil dhoondta hai’ (Mausam; 1975) to ‘Jiya jale’ (Dil Se; 1998) and ‘Dil toh bachcha hai ji’ (Ishqiya; 2010). He also discusses the songs of other greats, like Shailendra and Sahir Ludhianvi; his favourite music directors, like SD and RD Burman, Hemant Kumar and AR Rahman; and several playback singers, among them, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Vani Jairam, Jagjit Singh and Bhupinder Singh.Full of insight, anecdote and analysis—and containing over 40 songs, in roman script and English translation—this book is a treasure for students and lovers of Hindi cinema, music and poetry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

GULZAR is one of the most respected and loved film and literary personalities of India. A captivating read for those interested in Indian history and culture.

An amazing, brilliant, and incredibly erudite book' Lee Siegel India’s association with magic goes back thousands of years – from the seals of Mohenjodaro that depicted sorcerers and yogis, to the jugglers, mountebanks and acrobats that dazzled audiences at the courts of Hindu maharajas and Mughal emperors. Tales were told of ropes being thrown up in the air, strong enough for a boy to climb and disappear; of fakirs being buried alive for months and brought back to life; and of sanperas charming deadly cobras with their flutes. In the early nineteenth century, touring Indian magicians mesmerized audiences abroad, prompting generations of Western illusionists to emulate their Eastern peers. Jadoowallahs, Jugglers and Jinns: A Magical History of India tells us how Indian magic descended from the domain of the gods to become part of daily ritual and popular entertainment, and its transformation from the street to the stage culminating with the rise of the great P. I had faced the difficulty to find such information in one place in my student career. Violin as an Instrument travelled all the way from Europe to India way back in early 17th century during the British rule. Violin although remained unchanged as far as its structure is concerned but a lot of changes have been made as far as its playing techniques, its holding position, its handling, its repertoire, keeping in mind the versatility of the sound quality of this very perfect instrument which is very close to the human voice. Violin was first accepted and adopted by the musicians from south India and they started using it as an accompanying instrument with Carnatic music. Later it was adopted by the Hindustani classical musicians almost 100 years back. Initially it was played by imitating the Instrumental style as it used to be played in other string instruments like Sitar, Sarode and this style was popularly known as Gatkari style until Dr. Smt N. Rajam created history by introducing the Gayaki Ang in Violin playing in which she has proved that each and every vocal style like Dhrupad, Khayal, Tappa, Thumri, Kajri, Chaiti, Bhajan etc can be played with proficiency with a very fine scientific techniques of violin playing. In this book I have tried to throw light on the Gayaki Ang and also tried to cover all the stalwarts in the field of Violin in Hindustani Classical violin along with the young violinists of Hindustani classical music from the length and breadth of the country who have given their squirrel effort to popularize this instrument and contributed their bit. I sincerely hope that this work of mine will be of some help for researcher, students and also those who love this instrument.

About the Author

Dr. Swarna Khuntia hails from a family of musicians from Cuttack, Odisha. The purpose of Coomaraswamy’s book is to show the power of India’s soul, to show all the riches that it holds stored up, with which to ennoble and render happy the human race. In these interesting essays, the vast and tranquil metaphysic of India is unfolded; her conception of the universe, her social organisation, perfect in its day and still capable of adaptation to the demands of modern times; the solution which she offers for the feminist problem, for the problems of the family, of love, of marriage; and lastly, the magnificent revelation of her art.

About the Author

ANANDA K. COOMARASWAMY was born in 1877, of Anglo-Ceylonese parents. After completing studies in Geology he soon became interested in the arts and crafts of his native Ceylon and India. In 1917 he relocated to the USA where he became Keeper of Indian and Islamic Art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, establishing a large collection of Oriental artifacts and presenting lectures on their symbolic and metaphysical meaning. An encounter with the seminal writings of perennialist author René Guénon served to confirm and strengthen his view of the Perennial Philosophy. From this period onwards Dr. Coomaraswamy began to compose his mature--and undoubtedly most profound--works, adeptly expounding the philosophia perennis by drawing on his unparalleled knowledge of the arts, crafts, mythologies, cultures, folklores, symbolisms, and religions of the Orient and the Occident. For this book in two volumes, Amrita's extant letters and writings are translated and reproduced from the originals in their entirety. The book draws on the primary text of these letters to open up a visual narrative around the artist's oeuvre, complemented by a parallel text of notes that not only annotate but also entangle the personal in the web of contemporaneity. The editorial intervention expands the setting to include the artist's voice, photographs from the Sher-Gil family album, a collation of reviews from contemporary art critics, and excerpts from autobiographies and testimonies that touched Amrita's life. There are full-colour reproductions of 147 paintings by the artist, representing the largest such collection in print, as well as of her early sketches and watercolors. This archival effort makes for a definitive volume on the life, art and writings of Amrita Sher-Gil. The book includes a foreword by Salman Rushdie; a prologue and an epilogue by Vivan Sundaram; a complete list of Amrita Sher-Gil's 172 known oil paintings with thumbnail sketches and detailed captions; and a select bibliography of writings by and on Amrita Sher-Gil.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Vivan Sundaram was born in Shimla in 1943. They not only display their own technique and art of colour and line but also express, interpret and exhibit the soul/spirit and beauty of another art, the art of music, the art of svara - laya and cultivated/cultured voice. Music was considered to be of divine origin and was supposed to possess the property of evoking an ecstatic state of mind or mood, called rasa - anubhuti, in the musician as well as the listerner. This conception of rasa is the basis of all art in India. The sadhakas (practitioners) devised some formulas in order to capture and comprehend the divine quality of music and to evoke rasa or brahmananda. These were formulated in the form of prayers in which the conceptual form, dhyana - murti, of the raga was described. Thus the ragas were personified or deified. This fact provided a rich and expressive theme to Indian painters and it has considerably enriched the art treasure of India. Whether the dhyana - theory of ragas is scientific or otherwise it certainly furnished a rich source of theme for the Indian artists who painted some of the most charming and inspiring pictures representing the ragas (melodies). The two Ragamala MSS discovered in a Manuscripts collection at Jammu are a part of the extensive art treasure created all over India during the period from 16th to 19th centuries. The Jammu Ragamala paintings were done expressly with the usual object of depicting their dhyana - murtis or icons in order to create the relevant rasa situation in those looking at them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sukhdev Singh Charak is a renowned author and historian, particularly known for his work on the history and culture of Himalayan states. Delhi - call it the city of monuments or monumental city, few places in the world can claim to be so steeped in history. A throbbing , crucial, power centric capital, where people live in several centuries at any given time; from the pre Christian age to the 21st century. The origin of the very name of this metropolis is open to debate. You cannot drive one kilometre even in Lutyen's New Delhi without encountering at least the remains of a fort, a temple, a mosque or a tomb. Each one of them a witness to an era of history. Hundreds of them have been identified and documented, often with scholars delightfully disagreeing with each other! An equal number of such relics remain unresearched, shrouded still in enigmatic aura. This is not a book for students of history, it does not even purport to be an original recording. The intention is to visually facilitate an understanding of the city's most outstanding monuments. As far as possible, care has been taken to maintain consistency in dates and spellings; despite which, if a couple of inaccuracies have crept through, it may be viewed with a historical perspective. What's in a name or date, when juxtaposed with 5,000 years of civilization.

DETAILS :

Author : Swati Ghosh

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Niyogi Books

Publication date ‏ : ‎ December 17, 2018

Edition ‏ : ‎ 2019th

Language ‏ : ‎ English

Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 256 pages

ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 9386906767

ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-9386906762

Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 850 G

ABOUT THE BOOK

Design movement in Tagore’s santiniketan by Swati Ghosh chronicles the evolution of hand-drawn designs across nations, cultures and time. Covering the eight classical dance forms of India – Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Odissi and Sattriya – Leela Venkataraman seamlessly weaves together a historical perspective with the contemporary scenario.Stripped of their association with the temple and the court, classical dance traditions in India went through a period of unprecedented change in the period marking the last few years of British rule and thereafter. From becoming part of the nationalist struggle when India was trying to rediscover its lost identity, to sharing the international stage today with dance forms from all over the world, the last sixty-six years have seen many changes in perspective and presentation of Indian Classical Dance - some intentional, others involuntary. While looking at these years closely and their impact on dance forms, one realises that this is a phase in an ongoing process, with each new generation of dancers and musicians adding to an already rich tapestry of tradition. The book is beautifully illustrated and multi-faceted, dealing with various aspects of dance, including sponsorship and patronage, the teacher/disciple relationship and the contemporary classical dialectic. Unique in its vast range of covering all the classical forms, Indian Classical Dance is a must read for dancers and dance historians, students and teachers of dance and those interested in this fascinating field of Indian culture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leela Venkataraman is one of India’s most respected dance critics and scholars, with decades of experience writing on classical dance traditions.
