In one way this work recalls the traditions of Coomaraswamy but seeks to join it to the mainstream of critical history. It argues that the living continuity of Indian Culture is rooted in a unique spiritual vision and social experience. Indian Culture is neither the result of merely accidental happenings through the centuries, nor a mere palimpsest of migrations and invasions. It is, in its essence, a development of foundational ideas constituting a creative matrix. Behind its changing historical forms lies a deep and persistent source of creativity which is spiritual in character.
The Present volume I deals with the spiritual vision and symbolic forms. Here it has been upheld that the spiritual vision of India had two original aspects, the integral or synoptic vision of the Vedas, and the Sramanic vision of Transcendence. Purnata and Sunyata constituted the two poles round which Indian spirituality revolved. The author not only elucidates this bipolar matrix of Indian spiritual praxis or sadhana, but also traces its intricate ancient history. He goes on to trace the great symbolic forms-language, myth, science, literature and art-in which this basic vision expressed itself. In all these areas he brings out the basic general principles expressive of inner consciousness rather that present a mere selection of well-known details.
The Present volume II deals with the dimensions of ancient Indian social history. Here it has been maintained that the social awareness of ancient India was characterized by a distinctive perception of geographical space, historical time and human personality. The social bond itself was conceived primarily as an over-arching moral order, not merely as a structure engendered by casual factors belonging to the technical order although these found their rightful place within the large ethos of the whole. It is in this context of the integral ideational foundations of society that the intricate history of Varna and Jati is sought to be elucidated and the distinctiveness of ancient economic and political ideas and institutions brought out. It is, therefore, a vastly different approach to the social history of India that the one often projected these days.

About the Author:

Govind Chandra Pande (b. 1923, Allahabad), D. The decline of that empire had, however, commenced nearly a century before the year 1738, from which this book starts. The first unperceived origin and the gradual spread of the moral decay has been studied by me in earlier works, to which the reader must turn if he wishes to learn how step by step the poison worked in the body politic of the Delhi empire. Outwardly the empire reached its zenith under Shah Jahan (r. 1628- 1658) but in this very reign its decline commenced.
My History of Aurangzib, in five volumes, starts with a detailed study of that prince's campaigns as his follower's agent in the Deccan, Balkh and Qandahar, followed by his administrative and martial activities as an exceptionally capable viceroy of the Deccan, other incidents, and the illness (in 1657) which cost Shah Jahan his throne. The earlier history of the Sultanates of Bijapur and Golkonda and the rise of the Maratha national hero Shivaji are sketched here. The second volume describes the war of succession among Shah Jahan's sons.
The third volume of History of Aurangzib confines itself to north India during the first half of Aurangzib's reign, which he passed there in comparative peace except for the long wars with the Afghan frontier tribes and with the Raj puts. It describes his family and ministers, the state policy and moral regulations, his religious bigotry and the reaction it provoked among the Rajputs and the Sikhs. The basic ideas of the Islamic State are critically analysed and their practical effect illustrated. Tod's Annals and Antiquities of Rajas than is corrected at many points.
The fourth volume deals only with southern India from 1658 to 1689 but it also looks back to 1644, the roots of Mar at ha history. It tells the full story of the last years and the extinction of the kingdoms of Bijapur and Golkonda, and the reigns of Shivaji and Shambhuji as reconstructed from many original sources.
The last eighteen years of the emperor's life - 1689-1707 - with their strenuous exertion and hopeless suffering are the theme of the fifth volume. This book also treats of the history of the Madras coast districts and the Mysore plateau, the seige of Jinji - 'the eastern Troy', the successful Maratha national struggle for independence, the European piracy on the eastern waters, the clash between the Mughal government and the English traders, the thirty years' war in Rajputana, There is a general history of several provinces during this long reign with a study of the causes of the empire's decline.
But the social history of the country is not studied, except for brief references, in these volumes. A separate volume entitled Mughal Administration discusses the structure of the imperial government, the sovereign's power and functions (as pope and Holy Roman emperor) combined), the departmental procedure, the provincial administration, taxation, Muslim law and justice, the status of the aristocracy, the state industries and the official correspondence rules. The book ends with a review of Muslim rule in India and its achievements and failures. The personal character of Aurangzib is illustrated in Anecdotes of Aurangzib , translated from a Persian manuscript that was traced and edited by me. It gives his pithy sayings, cutting remarks, the principles of government, the treatment his sons and officers - Hindus and Shias - received, and his last will and testament It is a picture of his administration in its actual working.
Shivaji, who dominated the political stage of south India during half of Aurangzib's reign, is portrayed in full detail in my Shivaji and His Times - now in the fourth edition. It is supplemented by a volume of documents and studies on Maratha history, entitled House of Shivaji. These two books complete the history of India by fully treating the south Indian affairs, which my History of Aurangzib had somewhat neglected in concentrating on. In House of Shivaji will be found the most correct account of that great king's historic interview with the Mughal emperor, the life of his father Shahji, the reign of his son Shambhuji, and the adventures of Prince Akbar, the rebel son of Aurangzib.
The evolution of Indian culture and society is surveyed in broad outlines in my India through the Ages which reveals the contribution of the Muslim age to the joint product as well as our legacies from the Aryans, the Buddhists and the British. The cultural aspects are also illustrated by the chips from my Mughal workshop which I have gathered together in a volume of eighteen chapters, called Studies in Aurangzib's Reign. It treats of this emperor's daily routine, his sons and the poetess- daughter Zeb-un-nisa, his saintly elder sister Jahanara - 'the Indian Antigone', the two contemporary Hindu historians of the reign who wrote in Persian, the Portuguese pirates of' Chittagong, and the industries and commerce of the empire.
After the death of Aurangzib (1707) the narrative is continued in William Irvine's Later Mughals. I corrected and annotated his manuscript- which ends at 1737 - and published it in two volumes in 1922 after adding three chapters that cover Nadir Shah's invasion of India, 1738- 39. Irvine had made a masterly synthesis of all sources in the Oriental and European languages known to him, but he could not use a new source of information of the highest value that begins to light up Mughal history from 1720 onwards. This has become our primary authority for the second half of that century: I mean the state papers and letters in Marathi. I have woven information from this source into the text of Irvine's narrative, which was restricted to Persian and English sources.
Fall of the Mughal Empire begins where Irvine's book ends: early in 1739. Here, necessarily, the Persian and Marathi sources - mostly unprinted - form the main support of the historian. The first volume of the work deals with the reigns of Mu ham mad Shah and Ahmad Shah and . ends at 1754 when the last hereditary emperor was murdered. The second volume is devoted to the classic contest between the Afghans and the Marathas that culminated in the battle of Panipat (1761), the rise and line of the rat kingdom, and the disintegration of the political order in Rajputana, Malwa and the Panjab. The third volume tells the sickening tale of the struggle for the control of the puppet emperor by rival Muslim les and that ended with the installation of Mahadji Sindhia as the viceregent of the empire, December 1784. The fourth volume tells the of Mahadji Sindhia's hard-won triumphs over the Rajputs and his rival Holkar, the break-up of the Peshwa's empire, and the rise of the political meteor, Jaswant Rao Holkar. It ends with the establishment of British paramountcy in 1803.

numismatic-art-of-india-historical-and-aesthetic-perspectives-and-an-album-of-the-masterpieces-of-indian-coins-two-volume-set
Numismatic Art of India: Historical and Aesthetic Perspectives and An Album of the Masterpieces of Indian Coins (Set of 2 Volumes)

DETAILS :

Author : B. Ray discusses industrial enterprises, the rise of scientific education, intellectual renaissance in Bengal, and challenges of Indian society such as caste, colonial policies, and rural poverty. During the medieval era, this eventful journey saw the rise of Muslim dynasties which brought into being a unique culture, quite distinct from that of northern India. The colonial conquest in the eighteenth century opened the modern chapter of Bengal’s history and transformed the social and economic structure of the region. Nitish Sengupta traces the formation of Bengali identity through the Bengal Renaissance, the growth of nationalist politics and the complex web of events that eventually led to the partition of the region in 1947, analyzing why, despite centuries of shared history and culture, the Bengalis finally divided along communal lines. The struggle of East Pakistan to free itself from West Pakistan’s dominance is vividly described, documenting the economic exploitation and cultural oppression of the Bengali people. Ultimately, under the leadership of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman, East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971. Land of Two Rivers is a scholarly yet extremely accessible account of the development of Bengal, sketching the eventful and turbulent history of this ancient civilization, rich in scope as well as in influence.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nitish Sengupta became an IAS officer in 1957 and served as the Revenue Secretary of the Government of India. Dr. Bakshi argues that while British imperialism facilitated the rise of capitalism, it also maintained feudal structures. He notes that the transformation of land relations, which was essential for capitalism's growth, often relied on agreements with feudal elites. The economic policies of the British led to rapid agricultural commercialization and a deepening integration into the global capitalist economy, intensifying class distinctions among Indian peasants. Focusing on Bengal, Dr. Bakshi highlights the unique features of landlordism in the region and its long-standing feudal characteristics, setting the stage for a critical exploration of India's socio-economic landscape.

Book Description

About The Book

The Mlechchhas of Ancient India - their History and Culture embodies in eight chapters a detailed survey of references to the Mlechchhas found in early and medieval Indian Literary texts, foreign notices and epigraphic documents. The term Mlechchha originally denoted a language or speakers of a particular language. Later, it was attributed to both foreigners and some indigenous racial stocks who did not abide by Brahmanical rules and regulations relating to religious rites and social customs. Mlechchhas were not always shunned as impure barbarians. Matrimonial alliance with them was often cemented by ruling houses adhering to Indian religious systems. An attempt is perceptible in later Smriti texts at absorbing the Mlechchhas into the Brahmanical fold by providing for them a berth in the jäti system. The readers will understand the evolution of the role of the Mlechchhas or rather the concept of the term Mlechchha in Indian history from the age of the Indus civilization (if Meluhha of some old West Asiatic documents can somehow be connected with it) or at least from the (early?) Vedic times to the "early mediaeval period". The period called by the authoress "early mediaeval", may, however, better be known (as the undersigned has shown else- where) as "protomediaeval" (ending in c. A.D. 1200).

PREFACE

In the middle of the eighties of the last century Prof. B. This book may appropriately be regarded as a history of the struggle, during 1947-1990, for the establishment of a vibrant civil society in Bangladesh. Inevitably, therefore, it is also pertinent to characterise this book as a concise political history of Bangladesh during the aforesaid period.

The term, civil society', used in this book, calls for an explanation, even though the meaning of this term is quite clear to the people of Bangladesh, who derive this meaning from their history (as noted below) rather than from academic debates not quite germane to their vital experiences. The origin of this term, 'civil society', can be traced to the writings of the seventeenth century political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. Despite the evolution of this term through various debates, definitions and interpretations in the succeeding centuries, the essential message has become more and more transparent. There are many who use 'civil society' and 'civilised society' synonymously. Some readers of this book, who may justifiably lack a deep awareness of the subtleties of Bangladesh politics, and an empathy for the sufferings of the people of this country, may occasionally detect an oversimplification in the use of this term. Authors of this book, consequently, have to remind readers that they cannot but respect the special significance of 'civil society' in the minds of the people of Bangladesh, which, again, is attune to some crucial features of the history of Bangladesh. It may be plausible to observe that 'civil society' tends to acquire nuances varying with the history of a country.

For most of the time in the brief history of Bangladesh, the dominant experience of its people has been that of oppression, physical and mental, by military rulers, or, the military society. Members of the military society have often captured power in Bangladesh by sheer force of arms, and tried to reshape everything in the state and the society in conformity with the military model. At the other pole is the 'civil society, the society of men without arms. The status and the sophistication of the civil society vary with the nature of civilian supremacy with the dominance of unarmed men over the state and the society.

In a similar vein. Justice K. M. Sobhan wrote an incisive article on the civil society and the rule of law (published in the Dainik Banglabazar. 23 March 1399, Bengali Era). According to Justice Sobhan, the meaning of 'civil society' becomes the first issue in any discussion of 'civil society in the socio-political context of Bangladesh. He recommends that, from the standpoint of a social scientist, the most meaningful Bengali translation of 'civil society' should equate it with 'democratic society. After all, only a democratic system or a democratic society can ensure the predominance of the unarmed people.

The 1972 Constitution of Bangladesh, too, can be cited for the endorsement of such a view of the civil society. For, Article 11 says "The Republic shall be a democracy in which fundamental human rights and freedoms and respect for the dignity and worth of the human person shall be guaranteed, and in which effective participation by the people through their elected representatives in administration at all levels shall be ensured. Moreover. Article 19 says: "(1) The State shall endeavour to ensure equality of opportunity to all citizens. (2). The State shall adopt effective measures to remove social and economic inequality between man and man and to ensure the equitable distribution of wealth among citizens, and of opportunities in order to attain a uniform level of economic development throughout the Republic."

History of Modern Orissa By J. In the case of Anthropology, these questions center around humanity itself, making it a holistic study of mankind.

Anthropology revolves around three primary inquiries about humanity. The first question examines how humans originated and developed distinct physical features alongside the ability to communicate. The answer lies in the process of evolution. This evolutionary journey—from single-celled organisms to the emergence of modern humans—illustrates a complex transformation over millennia.

The evolutionary narrative begins with the amoeba and progresses through various phases, leading to the appearance of mammals. Over time, anthropoid apes emerged, eventually giving rise to Homo sapiens. An evolutionary tree would reveal the continuity from these early forms to modern humans. Comparative anatomy highlights how the structures of four-legged mammals evolved towards bipedalism, illustrating the gradual transition from apes to humans. (2) Governmental and institutional measures to reconstruct rural economy and society have not changed the semi-feudal semi-capitalist rural power structure. The components of development planning are objectives, goals and targets, resources, selection of means to mobilize resources, formulation of specific programmes and provision for its implementation. The economic programmes of the tribal development agencies are directed towards ensuring an immediate boost to agricultural production in tribal areas, to improve the economic conditions of the landless among the tribals by providing them with land and land inputs, to reorganize the co-operative and marketing structure, to provide employment and increased income to the tribals through animal keeping, agro-based cottage industries and the like. The family-based economic programmes include land reclamation, land development, supply of agricultural inputs and the like. The area-based economic programmes include construction of roads, execution of minor irrigation and lift irrigation schemes etc. The state in post-independence India recognized the special problems of the weaker sections of society and offered special programmes to improve their quality of life and for the alleviation of poverty. The Community Development Programmes were initiated to bring about awareness among the rural masses. Several land reforms measures have been introduced to redistribute land to the tillers. The Panchayati Raj has been introduced to decentralize some of the state powers in order to solve local problems by local leaders.

Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP). National Rural Employment Programme (NREP), Tribal Sub-plan (TSP), Jawar Rojgar Yojana (JRY), National Old Age Pension Scheme (NOAPS), Indira Abas Yojana (IAY), National Maternity Benefit Scheme NMBS) etc have been introduced for social mobility of individual tribals. These state-sponsored programmes have a limited success because only a small fraction of tribes reached the target level. The well-placed tribals have created a new process of social differentiation. The tribal social identity is moving towards tribal class mobility. Tribals are now found in almost every stratum of our society from administrators to agricultural labourers. There is also evidence of successful caste mobility through Sanskritization. The tribals now imitate the non-tribal habits, but they are not equal to the non-tribals. The tribal problem in India is characterized by the process of institutionalized exploitation and socio-political marginalization, produced by the twin historical process of unequal incorporation and exclusion.

Book Description

About the Book
Memoirs of Homeland: Refugees of 1947

This collection explores the harrowing narratives of families affected by the partition of Bengal in 1947, focusing on the struggles of Hindu and Muslim Bengali professionals who found themselves on the "wrong" side of the newly drawn border. Both of our families were impacted, fleeing their ancestral homes for West Bengal, a region designated for "Hindu India," while leaving "Muslim East Pakistan," the eastern wing of the newly formed Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

After the partition, East Bengal became East Pakistan, comprising 55,000 square miles with a majority population of Bengali people. This area eventually became Bangladesh following the 1971 Liberation War, during which the West Pakistani military waged a brutal campaign against the Bengali majority who had voted for the Awami League Party in the 1970 elections. The Awami League was denied the opportunity to govern, resulting in widespread terror targeting Hindus—who made up a significant minority—secular Muslims, and pro-secular activists.

Before our parents fled, colonial powers had drawn arbitrary lines through Bengal and Punjab, rendering them minorities in their own homeland and making them targets of ethnic cleansing. This created a human catastrophe that remains largely unrecognized, as the pain and suffering of partition have been largely omitted from Indian textbooks and remain unknown to many outsiders.

Tagore India & Soviet Union: A Dream Fulfilled By A.
