It originated in southern India, where it was taught by males and performed by female Devadasis, both of whom belonged to the same caste. Traditionally, the dance was associated with Hindu temples and courts and was performed in a variety of sacred and secular settings. Since the early twentieth century, both practitioners of and venues for the dance have expanded. It is now taught and performed globally by people from all castes and nationalities, including teachers and dancers of all genders and religions. Most performances are now public events presented on the concert stage. Anne-Marie Gaston, traces the development of Bharatanatyam from its religious and secular roots. She gives details of the teachers who were most influential in the transmission of the dance from traditional to modern practitioners and discusses the role of different interpretations (banis). By describing traditional and modern performances and choreography, she traces changes in the repertoire and presentation that have taken place during the post-revival era. Trends in performances at the MMA, considered the most important venue for Bharatanatyam, are described. Comments from the author’s in-depth studies of Bharatanatyam, as both performer and academic, give a historical perspective to the current manifestation of the dance. Her observations are drawn especially from recitals at the Madras Winter Festivals, 211-15. The volume is profusely illustrated with the author’s own photographs.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anne-Marie Gaston, also known as Swami Amritananda Devi, was a renowned scholar and practitioner of Indian classical dance. Tragedies are thought-provoking; they delve into human nature, the failings and foibles of great and small people. Tragedies show us our weaknesses and warn us of the pitfalls that await even those who have achieved greatness. Comedies, on the other hand, make us laugh; sweep us into a long moment of forgetfulness, delivering an opiate for the senses from the travails of daily living. And when they are done, the reality is twice as hard. Tragedies, on the other hand, make you realize that indeed all the world is a stage, and your problems are small compared to what befell those on screen or stage. They also give you insights into how relationships develop, change, turn sour, and ... oh come on, tragedies teach a lot. But really, I would have preferred Ijaazat. So nuanced a film, such a compelling story, such music, and then there was the visual poetry that added to the actors' craft. When the film ended, I sat back, leaned forward and started it all over again, realizing by now, that there were so many layers in the film that needed attention. Suddenly, comedy held a new meaning. Incidentally, the last two are also written by Gulzar.

Angoor kept me quite busy. A major handicap was that Sanjeev Kumar was no longer around, and Deven Verma was too ill to give me audience when I called, and passed away before I could ask again. Moushumi Chatterjee would only speak to me on the phone, and her information was sketchy at best. It remained for Deepti Naval and Gulzar to fill in the main actors' parts too, and give me enough about their approach to their roles. Happily for me, both filled the need most adequately. It covers all the features, aspects and facets of Manipuri Dance and offers an exhaustive theoretical and practical view of the form. Songs, rhythmic patterns, hand gestures and feet movements are offered in particulars. The three main branches of Manipuri dance - the Laiharaoba, the Sainkirtana and the Rasalila has been dealt in details, while the contributions of different personalities in and outside Manipur have been put forward for ready references to the students, scholars, researchers and dance lovers of Indian Dance. An exclusive chapter on the role of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore to uphold Manipuri Dances has also adorned this book.

INTRODUCTION

The love ordered me from the moment of my birth my parents remembered that I would move any rhythmical home and the joy palpable in my eyes indicated my feelings of affection, adoration and devotion to the eternal movement art. In India the school academics did not incorporate performing art subjects the then time so admission to a very high Standard English medium school in Kolkata, South Paint High School, did not really help me to pursue my interest field as a part of my routine study. I was admitted to Children Little Theatre (CLT), a renowned children's academy of performing art in Kolkata Stalwarts of dance and theatre field were associated with this institution and being nurtured under such personalities was my first wild grounding for presentation on stage. It was here that I came across the words Folk, Classical Kabindrantya etc. the dances I learnt I enjoyed and the names and kinds of dances made no impact at that age. My dance classes included Kathakali taught by Balakrishna Menon, Odini taught by Muralidhar Majhi Manipuri by Kalavati Devi and other regional and folk dances. The other classical dances like Kathak and Bharatanatyam was also on the repertoire and an exposure to these helped me to learn the distinctive features of different dances of India. The children's dance dramas were a great place to learn theatre acting and frequent stage appearances in variety nodes trained me up with proscenium concept and presentation.

As I grew up playing with almost all the dance forms, I started developing a fond inclination towards Manipuri The padavali songs accompanying this dance, the sweetness of the syllables used the intricacies of the rhythmic patterns and above all the subtle nuances of this dance form, where the whole body comes into play with a pose of gestures suited perfectly with my mental settings. I started learning Manipuri seriously under Kalavati Devi, who groomed my body for Manipuri dance from that early age I passed out of school and thus out of CLT My innate wish to take up dance as a subject in undergraduate level could not stand up to my parents expectations So I took admission in Science subjects for college academics with Physics as my honors subject. But my training in Manipuri pursued now under Guru Bipin Singh in Manipuri Nartanalaya, Kolkata I came across the tutelage of the Jhaveri Sisters particularly Darshana Jhaveri whose affectionate teaching of this form has immensely enhanced my understanding of this dance form.

Guru Bipin Singh inspired and encouraged me to explore myself of the possibility to become a front ranking performer of this dance form It was quite a challenge because at no point did I ever dream of becoming a professional dance artist Moreover with a family background that would prefer a run of the mill career option, the idea to diverge myself into performing art occupation did leave me baffled for some time But the untiring practice that I was put into at IMA Bipin Pal Road Le Guruji's residence and the office of Manipuri Nartanalaya, made me not realize how the time passed by and within a few years I found myself performing in almost all the leading festivals in India and abroad Guru Bipin Singh's efforts to establish Manipur Dance as a solo repertoire for the stage gained quite a mileage and I was very fortunate to be one of his primary disciples in this direction of experimentation and innovation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0693/1218/4618/files/hai971_54621bc5-9e2c-4a6a-896f-f22324ad2957.webp?v=1757053460
rasa-performing-the-divine-in-india
Rasa (Performing The Divine in India)

DETAILS :

Author : Susan L. How is it possible that a word used to describe a delicious masala can also be used to critique a Bharata natyam performance? Rasa expresses the primary goals of performing arts in Indian in all the major literary, philosophical, and aesthetic texts, and it provides the cornerstone of the oral traditions of transmission. It is also essential to the study and production of sculpture, architecture, and painting. Yet its primary referent is cuisine. Covering the eight classical dance forms of India – Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Odissi and Sattriya – Leela Venkataraman seamlessly weaves together a historical perspective with the contemporary scenario.Stripped of their association with the temple and the court, classical dance traditions in India went through a period of unprecedented change in the period marking the last few years of British rule and thereafter. From becoming part of the nationalist struggle when India was trying to rediscover its lost identity, to sharing the international stage today with dance forms from all over the world, the last sixty-six years have seen many changes in perspective and presentation of Indian Classical Dance - some intentional, others involuntary. While looking at these years closely and their impact on dance forms, one realises that this is a phase in an ongoing process, with each new generation of dancers and musicians adding to an already rich tapestry of tradition. The book is beautifully illustrated and multi-faceted, dealing with various aspects of dance, including sponsorship and patronage, the teacher/disciple relationship and the contemporary classical dialectic. Unique in its vast range of covering all the classical forms, Indian Classical Dance is a must read for dancers and dance historians, students and teachers of dance and those interested in this fascinating field of Indian culture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leela Venkataraman is one of India’s most respected dance critics and scholars, with decades of experience writing on classical dance traditions.
