ABOUT THE BOOK

Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas is the foundational "Dig-Darshini" (guidebook) for the ritualistic and devotional life of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Compiled by Shri Gopal Bhatta Goswami (with significant contributions and commentary by Shri Sanatana Goswami), this two-volume set is the definitive manual on Vaidhi-Bhakti—devotional service following scriptural rules.

Often referred to as the "Vaishnava Smriti," these volumes cover every aspect of a devotee's life across 20 chapters (Vilasa):

  • Daily Rituals: Comprehensive instructions on Sandhya-Vandana, Puja, Arati, and the wearing of Tilaka and Tulasi beads.
  • Temple Worship: Detailed guidelines for deity installation (Pratishtha), construction, and the standards of temple seva.
  • Sacred Days: The observance of Ekadashi fasting and festivals like Janmashtami and Radhashtami.
  • Diksha (Initiation): The significance of the Guru-shishya relationship and the process of receiving sacred mantras.

This edition features the original Sanskrit verses paired with a meticulous Hindi translation, making it accessible to practitioners and scholars who wish to understand the Vedic roots of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s movement.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shri Gopal Bhatta Goswami (1503–1578) was one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan, the core group of disciples directly instructed by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to codify the theology and practice of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

Born in South India near the Shri Rangam temple, he was a scholar of immense depth who famously established the Shri Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan after his Shila (sacred stone) miraculously self-manifested into a beautiful deity form. He was known for his extreme humility, his strict adherence to Vedic principles, and his vast knowledge of the scriptures. His work, Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas, remains the authoritative source for Vaishnava behavior (Achara) and remains the standard for temples in Vrindavan and beyond to this day.
