ABOUT THE BOOK

Tarikh-e-Adab-e-Arabi (History of Arabic Literature) is a monumental work that serves as a cornerstone for students and scholars of the Arabic language. Written originally in Arabic as Tarikh al-Adab al-Arabi, it has been translated into Urdu and several other languages due to its academic rigor.

Ahmad Hasan Zayyat chronologically charts the evolution of Arabic prose and poetry, starting from the Jahiliyya (Pre-Islamic) period, through the Islamic Golden Age, the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates, and into the modern era. The book is lauded for its exquisite literary style—Zayyat doesn't just record history; he writes with the flair of a critic, analyzing the social and political forces that shaped the "rhetoric" (Balagha) and "eloquence" (Fasaha) of each age.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ahmad Hasan al-Zayyat (1885–1968) was a towering figure in 20th-century Egyptian literature and journalism. He was the founder and editor of the prestigious literary magazine Al-Risala, which became the most influential platform for Arab intellectuals for decades.

Zayyat was a graduate of Al-Azhar University and later studied in France, allowing him to harmonize traditional Islamic scholarship with Western critical methodologies. He was a member of the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo and was awarded the State Prize for Literature in Egypt. His work is characterized by a "neoclassical" style, aiming to preserve the purity of the Arabic language while addressing contemporary themes.
