ABOUT THE BOOK

Avasthatraya: or The Unique Method of Vedanta is a profound philosophical work by Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswati, dedicated to the "Method of the Three States of Consciousness." The book argues that the most direct way to realize the non-dual reality of Atman (the Self) is through a rigorous analysis of our everyday experience of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.

Unlike many modern interpretations of Vedanta that rely on mystical experiences, this book emphasizes a rational and universal method found in the original commentaries of Adi Shankara. It posits that by examining these three states, one can logically conclude that the Self is the "Witness" (Sakshi) which remains unchanged and ever-present, while the states themselves are transitory.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswati (1880–1975) was an extraordinary scholar-saint and the founder of the Adhyatma Prakasha Karyalaya in Holenarasipura, Karnataka. He is celebrated for his "Shankara-Siddhanta-Vimarsha"—a lifelong mission to rescue the original teachings of Adi Shankara from later sub-commentaries (Vyakhyanas) that he believed had introduced distortions. His approach is characterized by absolute fidelity to the Prasthana Traya (Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahma Sutras) and a rejection of unnecessary scholastic complexity in favor of direct experiential inquiry.
