Preface Highlights
In the preface, Professor Bhattacharyya reflects on his journey into Perso-Arabic epigraphy, highlighting his past work and the evolution of his research interests. He notes that the original impetus for this study stemmed from an initiative by the Archaeological Survey of India, which aimed to publish comprehensive treatises on various archaeological topics. Although that project was not realized, it inspired further research that eventually led to this analytical monograph.
The author emphasizes that the epigraphic material from medieval India offers crucial insights into the cultural interactions of the time, revealing a society marked by ideals of tolerance and inclusivity. Through this study, Bhattacharyya seeks to document the historical significance and artistic achievements reflected in these inscriptions, showcasing their role in the construction of a composite Indian identity.
