About The Book

This inspirational volume reminds us of the vision, energy and risk it takes to found a nation’s technology base. Today, we harvest the fruits of India’s technological transformation—in enterprise, in government, in communities. We owe that gift to the pioneers who sowed the seeds of India’s technology revolution. This excellent book tells us the stories of the visionaries who built our country’s digital armoury—and to whom we owe our thanks!
—Aruna Sundararajan, IAS, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, GoI

Much has been read, written, and rewritten about India’s success story and the milestones covered in information technology. Very few today remember the pioneers who made IT all happen. To read the first person account of the challenges and triumphs, and the way the captains in the IT space capitalised on the opportunities, is a rare and enriching experience. I applaud the initiative of the authors who made this happen. A must-read for every technology professional—and indeed, for all young Indians. Refreshing in content and in style.
—MN Vidyashankar, IAS (Rtd) former President,
India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA)

The incredible journey of the 150-billion dollar Indian IT industry is nearly six decades old, stretching as far back as the 1960s. Today, as the industry readies itself once again for the next wave of growth, one which is characterised by ‘digital’ and ‘innovation’, it is worthwhile to revisit some of the industry stalwarts who were instrumental in laying the foundation. Seen through the eyes of twenty-five industry veterans, the authors have skilfully recreated the structural interplay between the industry, the government and the academia over several decades, which has got us where we are. The journey is truly a compelling read.
—R Chandrasekhar, President, NASSCOM

This book is a story of pioneers and courageous people. It is also a book of warmth and gratitude. It connects many dots if you want to understand how a new industry is created.
—Prof Pankaj Chandra, Vice Chancellor, Ahmedabad University

Having closely observed and participated in the growth of the information and communications technology sector in India, from its genesis in the 1960s until today, I can relate very well to the icons that have been selected. Visionaries, teachers, administrators, researchers and entrepreneurs, who shared the dream of an ICT-enabled India, are all here. Such an account was missing, and I congratulate Anand Parthasarathy and Prof S Sadagopan for having painstakingly put together this compilation.
—Dr Anurag Kumar, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
