ABOUT THE BOOK

Inside Goa is a richly descriptive, historically grounded narrative that traces the layered history and culture of Goa—from its ancient roots to its Portuguese colonial era. Malgonkar, with the help of illustrator Mario Miranda, brings alive Goa’s distinctive blend of Hindu and Christian traditions, architecture, and landscapes. He explores how Goa’s identity emerged through centuries of political and religious change, including Portuguese rule, the Inquisition, and the lasting Goan spirit of harmony. The book also captures the essence of Goan life—its people, festivals, temples and churches—and how this tiny land has retained a timeless charm. With a mix of evocative prose and cartoons, it's both a love letter to and a history of “Golden Goa.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Manohar Malgonkar (1913–2010) was an Indian English-language writer, veteran army officer, big-game hunter, civil servant, and farmer. He was born in a family with roots in Goa and his many works often reflect his deep connection to history, adventure, and Indian identity. His writing spans fiction (novels, short stories) and non-fiction (histories, biographies), blending realism with a strong historical sense. Malgonkar was known for his clear, conversational English style, making complex historical narratives accessible. Apart from writing, he served in the Maratha Light Infantry and reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His multifaceted life (army, politics, business) deeply informed his storytelling.
