ABOUT THE BOOK
Keri Saheber Munshi (William Carey’s Clerk) is a classic of Bengali historical fiction by Pramathanath Bishi. Set against the backdrop of late 18th and early 19th-century Bengal, the novel brilliantly captures the dawn of the Bengal Renaissance.
The story revolves around the relationship between William Carey, the legendary Baptist missionary and philologist, and his "Munshi" (clerk/teacher), Ramram Basu. It serves as a vivid chronicle of the transition from the decaying Mughal influence to the rise of British colonial rule and the subsequent intellectual awakening in Serampore and Calcutta.
