ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

B.L. Raina was a pioneer in the field of population and the family planning movement, a medical historian and author of several books; especially on population and health science in ancient India. He was the recipient of Padma Shri in 1969, among other awards.

He served in the Army Medical Corps (1940-56), held various appointments including the assignment of the Chief Collator and Editor of the Medical history of the Indian Armed Forces in World War II. He was seconded to the Ministry of Health in 1956. He was the first Director, Family Planning, Ministry of Health, and the first Director, Central Family Planning Institute (1956-69).

He was widely traveled. He was United Nations Senior Family Planning Advisor in Egypt; Inter Regional Advisor for Middle- East and Africa Employers orientation in Population Action; international Labour Organization, Geneva; United Nations Expert in Family Planning Training in Singapore (1974) and for a number of year's member of World Health Organization.
