ABOUT THE BOOK
Roses in December is the celebrated autobiography of Mahomedali Currim Chagla (M.C. Chagla), one of India’s most distinguished jurists, diplomats, and statesmen. First published in 1973, the book is much more than a personal memoir; it is a vivid historical record of India’s transition from a British colony to a sovereign republic.
The title, taken from a quote by J.M. Barrie—"God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December"—reflects the author’s reflective journey through the "winter" of his life, recalling the fragrant memories of his past.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
M.C. Chagla was a man of immense intellectual integrity and secular conviction.
The Jurist: He served as the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court (1948–1958).
The Diplomat: He represented India as the Ambassador to the USA and the High Commissioner to the UK.
The Politician: He served as the Union Minister for Education and later as the Minister for External Affairs.
The Secularist: Despite being a Muslim, he was a staunch opponent of the partition of India and the "Two-Nation Theory," remaining a committed Indian nationalist throughout his life.
