ABOUT THE BOOK
The Bhagavata Purana, translated by Bibek Debroy, is a monumental three-volume English translation of one of the most beloved and influential scriptures in Hinduism. Often referred to as the "Fifth Veda," the Bhagavata Purana (or Srimad Bhagavatam) is the quintessential text of the Bhakti (devotional) movement.
While most translations are either abridged or heavily colored by a specific sectarian viewpoint, Debroy’s version is a unabridged, literal translation from the original Sanskrit. He aims to provide the reader with the text "as it is," allowing the stories and philosophical discourses to speak for themselves. The set covers all 12 Skandhas (books) and roughly 18,000 verses.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bibek Debroy (1955–2024) was a distinguished economist and a prolific Sanskrit scholar. He served as the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. Despite his background in economics, he dedicated decades to the "Mahabharata Project," producing acclaimed unabridged translations of the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the various Puranas. His work is characterized by academic rigor, clear English prose, and an objective approach to ancient Indian texts.
