ABOUT THE BOOK

The Prophet is a masterpiece of religious and philosophical prose poetry, arguably the most famous work by the Lebanese-American author Kahlil Gibran. Since its publication in 1923, it has never been out of print and has been translated into more than 100 languages.

The story follows a prophet named Almustafa, who has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for twelve years and is about to board a ship that will take him home. Before he leaves, a group of people stops him, and he engages in a series of dialogues regarding the core mysteries of the human condition. The book is divided into 26 poetic essays covering topics such as:

  • Love and Marriage: Famous for the advice to "fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup."
  • Work and Joy: Describing work as "love made visible."
  • Pain and Self-Knowledge: Viewing pain as the "breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding."
  • Death and Eternity: Offering a comforting, cyclical view of life and the afterlife.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) was a Lebanese-American writer, poet, and visual artist. Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon, his family emigrated to the United States when he was young. Gibran’s work stands as a bridge between the East and the West, blending the mysticism of the Arab world with the Romanticism of English literature.

Gibran was not only a literary giant but also an accomplished painter who studied in Paris under Auguste Rodin. His art and writing are characterized by a "Third Way" philosophy—a rebellion against both rigid religious orthodoxy and cold Western materialism. He is the third best-selling poet of all time, following Shakespeare and Laozi, and remains a symbol of spiritual unity and peace.
