ABOUT THE BOOK
The Unique Teaching of Shankara: A Discussion on His Adhyasa Bhashya is a seminal work by Sri Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswathi. It focuses exclusively on the Adhyasa Bhashya (the Preamble on Superimposition), which is arguably the most critical part of Adi Shankara’s commentary on the Brahma Sutras.
The central thesis of the book is that the entire philosophy of Advaita Vedanta rests on the concept of Adhyasa—the mutual superimposition of the Self (Atman) and the non-Self (Not-Self). Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswathi clarifies that according to Shankara, spiritual ignorance (Avidya) is not just a lack of knowledge but a positive error of identifying the pure "I" with the physical body, senses, and mind.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswathi (1880–1975) was an eminent scholar-monk and the founder of Adhyatma Prakasha Karyalaya. He is famous for his "Shankara-Siddhanta-Vimarsha," a project aimed at stripping away later scholastic layers to reveal the original, pure methodology of Adi Shankara. He insisted that Shankara's teaching is based on universal experience (Anubhava) and logic (Yukti), rather than mere dogma or belief.
