ABOUT THE BOOK
The Vedanta Sutras with the Commentary by Sankaracharya (specifically Volume 38 of the Sacred Books of the East series) is a foundational text in Indian philosophy. Translated by George Thibaut, this volume contains the second part of the Brahma Sutras (also known as Vedanta Sutras), which were composed by the sage Badarayana to systematize the teachings of the Upanishads.
The book focuses on Adi Shankara’s (8th century CE) famous Bhasya (commentary). This work is the definitive exposition of Advaita Vedanta (Non-dualism). Shankara argues that the individual soul (Atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman) are fundamentally one, and that the perceived world of duality is an illusion (Maya) caused by ignorance (Avidya).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Badarayana: The ancient sage credited with composing the original Sutras. His verses are extremely brief (aphoristic), requiring a commentary to be understood.
Adi Shankara: The primary commentator. He is credited with reviving Hinduism by providing a logical, philosophical framework for non-dualism. His commentary is praised for its intellectual rigor and poetic depth.
George Thibaut: A 19th-century Indologist whose translation remains a standard for academic study. He is noted for his critical introduction, where he compares Shankara’s views with those of later commentators like Ramanuja.
