Book Description

Introduction

The Upanishads are considered the cornerstone of spiritual development in India. Though they are rooted in ancient Sanskrit literature, they represent a pivotal chapter in the evolution of human thought. These texts have profoundly influenced various cultures, notably through Buddhism in the East and across the Middle East, as well as through Neoplatonism, Christian mysticism, and Persian Sufism in the West. Their journey to Europe began with a Persian translation into Latin, capturing the attention of intellectuals like Schopenhauer, who famously stated, "In the whole world there is no study so beneficial, and so elevating as that of the Oupanikhat (Upanishads). It has been the solace of my life, it will be the solace of my death."

In India, numerous philosophical systems and religious sects have emerged from this profound source. Even pre-Buddhist philosophies like Sankhya and Yoga show traces of their origins in the Upanishads. References to later religious movements centered around deities such as Shiva, Shakti, and Vishnu also appear within these texts. While many ancient ideas have faded into obscurity, the core concepts that remain continue to echo the teachings of the Upanishads, which serve as a foundational goal for spiritual seekers across India.

Preface

In my exploration of the Upanishads, I aimed to create translations that are accessible to all. My initial effort in Bengali was well-received by scholars and general readers alike, encouraging me to share these translations in English. Despite the existence of other English translations, my goal was to present the texts in a straightforward manner, reflecting the inherent simplicity and naturalness of the Upanishads. They guide individuals toward a profound understanding of their own integrity, a journey that, though challenging, is as clear and simple as truth itself.

Traditionally, the knowledge of the Upanishads was reserved for a select few. However, these texts passionately advocate for the unity, equality, and universality of humanity, emphasizing a single truth that unites us all. Over time, the straightforward meanings of these teachings became obscured by complex orthodox commentaries and sectarian interpretations. I believe that the wisdom contained within these texts should be accessible to everyone. My ambition has been to distill the essential meanings from the convoluted explanations that have arisen over time.

I invite readers to judge the success of my efforts, which I dedicate to the memory of the great sages. May their timeless words resonate with the hearts of those in the modern age.

Foreword

The Upanishads are foundational to Hindu culture and civilization, and their profound ideas have gained recognition not only in India but also among educated communities worldwide. These texts explore the highest ideals of existence and the most pressing questions of life and death that have preoccupied humanity throughout history. Many of the greatest minds from both the East and West regard the Upanishads as a pinnacle of wisdom.

Mrs. Chitrita Devi has made a commendable effort to popularize the essential teachings of the Upanishads through her complete English translation of nine texts and an abridged version of two others. Her translations are both accurate and easily comprehensible, making the wisdom of the Upanishads accessible to the average educated reader. She has captured the true spirit of these ancient writings, presenting their teachings in an engaging manner, which is no small feat.

Her general introduction offers a clear overview of the fundamental concepts underlying the principal Upanishads, such as Brahman—the ultimate reality. It explains the significance of the term "Upanisad" and its role in shaping Hindu culture, while addressing the eternal quest for Truth that the Upanishads fulfill, shedding light on the mysteries of life and death.

Overall, this work is a valuable contribution to the existing literature on this captivating and essential subject. I am confident that it will be greatly appreciated by all who sincerely seek the truth.
