ABOUT THE BOOK

A God in Exile: The Fourteenth Dalai Lama is a powerful visual odyssey and intimate biography captured by the legendary photographer Raghu Rai. This book is the result of nearly four decades of unprecedented access to Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama. It transcends a typical coffee-table book, offering a poignant look at the life of the Tibetan spiritual leader from his early years in exile in India to his emergence as a global icon of peace.

Rai’s photography captures the dual nature of the Dalai Lama: the "God-King" of Tibet performing solemn religious rites, and the simple monk who laughs heartily, tinkers with watches, and tends to his garden in Dharamshala. The book documents the struggle of the Tibetan people in exile, the serene beauty of the Himalayas, and the quiet, persistent strength of a man who lost his country but won the heart of the world. The narrative accompanying the images provides historical context and personal reflections, making it a definitive record of one of the most significant spiritual journeys of the 20th and 21st centuries.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Raghu Rai is India's most celebrated photojournalist and a protégé of the legendary Henri Cartier-Bresson. In 1977, he became the first Indian photographer to be invited to join Magnum Photos. Rai is known for his ability to capture the "soul of India," from the chaos of its streets to the dignity of its greatest leaders.

His work on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy is world-renowned, and he has received the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. Rai’s relationship with the Dalai Lama is one of mutual respect and long-standing friendship, which allowed him to capture moments of vulnerability and divinity that no other photographer could reach.
