ABOUT THE BOOK
Aap Beti is the deeply moving and intellectually rich autobiography of Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi. Originally written in Urdu, this seven-part work (usually bound in two volumes) is far more than a simple life story; it is a profound treatise on the history, struggles, and spiritual ethos of the scholars of Deoband and the Tablighi Jamaat.
The title Aap Beti (literally "An account of oneself") reflects the author's humility. Maulana Zakariyya provides an unvarnished look at his life, from his rigorous education and the extreme poverty he faced during his student years to his eventual status as one of the most respected Hadith scholars of the 20th century. The book is famous for its "spiritual anecdotes," detailing his relationship with his mentors, his intense devotion to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his tireless work in compiling the Fazail-e-Aamaal. It serves as a primary source for understanding the socio-religious landscape of India during the colonial and post-colonial eras.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Maulana Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi (1898–1982), often referred to by the honorific Sheikhul Hadith, was a world-renowned Sunni Hanafi scholar and the spiritual guiding light of the Tablighi Jamaat. Born in Kandhla, India, he spent the majority of his life teaching at the prestigious Madrasa Mazahir Uloom in Saharanpur.
He was a prolific author, having written over 100 books in Arabic and Urdu, most notably the monumental Awjaz al-Masalik, a multi-volume commentary on Imam Malik's Muwatta. Despite his global fame and the millions who followed his spiritual guidance, Maulana Zakariyya was known for his extreme asceticism, often spending his nights in prayer and his days in the service of knowledge. He eventually migrated to Medina, where he passed away and was buried in the blessed Al-Baqi cemetery.
