ABOUT THE BOOK

"Sunan Abu Dawud is one of the Kutub Al-Sittah (Six major hadiths books), collected by Abu Dawud. Abu Dawud collected 500,000 hadith, but included only 4,800 in this collection. Muslims regard this collection as fourth in strength of their Six major Hadith collections. It took him 20 years for collecting the ahadis. He made series of journeys to meet most of the foremost traditionists of his time and acquired from them the most reliable ahadis quoting sources through which it reached him. Since the author collected ahadis which no one ever assembled together, his sunan has been accepted as standard work by scholars from many parts of the Islamic world, especially after Ibn Al-Qaisarani's inclusion of it in the formal canonization of the six major collections. As against Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, this book contains some weak ahadith which are stated as such by Imam Abu Dawood himself or by other researchers. Translator of the book has mentioned under every such hadith the reason of weakness for the benefit of the readers."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Imam Abu Dawood Sulaiman bin Ash’ath al-Sajistani (817–889 CE) was born in Sistan (modern-day Iran/Afghanistan) and traveled extensively across the Muslim world—including Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia—to collect authentic traditions. He was a student of the legendary Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who reportedly held Abu Dawood in such high regard that he praised the Sunan upon its completion. Abu Dawood was not just a collector but a brilliant jurist who understood the nuances of how a single prophetic statement could influence an entire legal system.
