ABOUT THE BOOK
Al-Kabair (The Major Sins) is a foundational work in Islamic ethics and jurisprudence written by the renowned 14th-century scholar Imam Adh-Dhahabi. This bilingual Arabic-English edition serves as a sobering and essential guide for Muslims seeking to understand the spiritual and legal boundaries set by the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
The book identifies and explains the "Major Sins"—those actions for which the scriptures specify a legal punishment (Hadd), a threat of punishment in the Hereafter, or a curse from Allah and His Messenger. Adh-Dhahabi systematically lists 70 major sins, including:
- Spiritual Offences: Shirk (associating partners with Allah), magic, and neglecting daily prayers.
- Social and Ethical Crimes: Murder, adultery, theft, and usury (Riba).
- Interpersonal Sins: Backbiting, false testimony, and the mistreatment of orphans or parents.
Each chapter is structured with the original Arabic text followed by a precise English translation, citing relevant Qur'anic verses and Hadiths (prophetic traditions) to provide a clear theological basis for why each act is classified as a "Kabirah" (major sin).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Imam Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman adh-Dhahabi (1274–1348) was a giant of Islamic scholarship from Damascus. He was a master historian, a premier Hadith expert, and a scholar of the Shafi'i school of law. He is perhaps best known for his monumental biographical work, Siyar A'lam al-Nubala.
Adh-Dhahabi was a student of the famous Ibn Taymiyyah and was known for his rigorous critical standards in evaluating historical reports and the chains of narration in Hadith science. His writing is characterized by a "middle-path" approach—firm in its adherence to traditional scripture but intellectually honest in its historical analysis. Al-Kabair remains one of his most popular works because it translates complex legal and moral concepts into a practical "manual of conscience" for the everyday believer.
