ABOUT THE BOOK

Beyond the Mind is a foundational work by David Frawley that explores the limitations of the human intellect and the journey toward higher consciousness. It serves as an bridge between Western psychology and the profound spiritual traditions of the East, specifically the Advaita Vedanta (Non-dualism) and the teachings of the sage Ramana Maharshi.

The book posits that our habitual thoughts, emotions, and intellectual analysis create a "mental screen" that obscures our true nature. Key concepts include:

  • The Nature of the Ego: Frawley deconstructs the ego as a collection of memories and identifications that prevent us from experiencing the "I-Am" presence.
  • Self-Inquiry (Atma-Vichara): A practical guide to the method of asking "Who am I?" to trace the source of thought back to pure awareness.
  • The Limits of Intellectual Knowledge: The book argues that while the mind is a useful tool for navigation in the material world, it is incapable of grasping the Infinite; realization must occur beyond the mind.
  • Cosmic Consciousness: Exploration of how the individual mind is linked to the Universal Mind and the steps one can take to dissolve the boundaries between the two.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. David Frawley (also known as Pandit Vamadeva Shastri) is one of the few Westerners recognized in India as a Vedacharya (Teacher of the Vedas). He is a prolific author and scholar whose work spans Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology (Jyotish), Yoga, and Vedanta.

Frawley’s unique contribution lies in his ability to translate the high-level abstractions of ancient Sanskrit texts into a language that resonates with the modern, psychologically-minded reader. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honors, for his contributions to the fields of education and Vedic science. He remains a leading voice in the "Global Vedic Renaissance," emphasizing that spirituality is a science of consciousness that can be tested and experienced.
