ABOUT THE BOOK

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (The Ocean of the Nectar of Devotional Mellows) is the foundational masterpiece of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, originally composed in Sanskrit by Srila Rupa Goswami in the 16th century. This two-volume set, translated and commented upon by Bhanu Swami, provides a systematic and scientific analysis of Bhakti (devotion).

Rupa Goswami uses the metaphor of an ocean to categorize the different stages of devotion:

The Eastern Wave: Describes the four types of Bhakti, including Sadhana-bhakti (practice), Bhava-bhakti (emotion), and Prema-bhakti (pure love).

The Southern Wave: Analyzes the "ingredients" of Rasa (devotional taste), such as Vibhavas, Anubhavas, and Vyabhicari-bhavas.

The Western Wave: Discusses the five primary relationships (Rasas) with the Divine.

The Northern Wave: Details the seven indirect or secondary Rasas.
