ABOUT THE BOOK
The Bhavishya Purana is one of the eighteen major Mahapuranas, renowned for its unique focus on "Bhavishya" or future events. This six-volume set, attributed to the sage Sri Krsna Dvaipayana (Vedavyasa), is a massive compendium that blends traditional cosmogony and religious rites with startlingly specific "prophecies." It is famous—and often debated—for containing passages that seemingly predict the rise of various religions, historical figures like Ashoka and Vikramaditya, and even colonial-era events. Beyond its prophetic nature, the volumes provide detailed instructions on Sun worship (Saurashtra tradition), domestic rituals, and the duties of different social classes, making it a critical text for understanding the evolution of Puranic literature over centuries.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sri Krsna Dvaipayana, more commonly known as Veda Vyasa, is the legendary sage and polymath traditionally regarded as the compiler of the four Vedas and the author of the Mahabharata and all eighteen Puranas. In the context of the Bhavishya Purana, he is seen as the divine seer who used his "Tri-kala-jnana" (knowledge of past, present, and future) to document the trajectory of the Kali Yuga. Historically, scholars view "Vyasa" as a title or a lineage of editors who expanded these texts over time, but in the spiritual tradition, he remains the singular, immortal authority on Vedic wisdom. His work is characterized by the preservation of "Dharma" through narrative storytelling and prescriptive law.
