ABOUT THE BOOK
Buddhist Texts through the Ages is a seminal anthology edited by the renowned scholar Edward Conze, in collaboration with I.B. Horner, David Snellgrove, and Arthur Waley. First published in 1954, it was designed as a comprehensive companion to Conze's earlier work, Buddhism: Its Essence and Development.
The book is significant because it was one of the first major attempts to provide English-speaking readers with a balanced, chronological, and "denominational" overview of Buddhist scripture, moving beyond the then-prevalent focus solely on Pali literature.
ABOUT THE EDITOR: Edward Conze (1904–1979)
Conze was a giant in the field of Buddhist studies. He was particularly famous for his translations of the Prajñāpāramitā literature. His style was rigorous and academic, yet he was deeply sympathetic to the internal logic of the spiritual traditions he studied, often critiquing modern materialism through the lens of Buddhist philosophy.
