The Books Included

1. An Ember in the Ashes

The Premise: Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Laia is a Scholar living under the Empire's heel. When her brother is arrested for treason, she strikes a deal with the Resistance: she will spy on the Empire's most elite military school in exchange for their help.

The Conflict: Elias is the school’s finest soldier, but he loathes the tyranny he represents. The two find their fates intertwined during the "Trials"—a brutal competition to crown a new Emperor.

2. A Torch Against the Night

The Journey: Picking up immediately after the first book, Elias and Laia are now fugitives. They must race across the Empire to reach the high-security prison, Kauf, to rescue Laia’s brother.

The Blood Shrike: This book introduces the POV of Helene Aquilla, Elias's former friend, who is now tasked by the sadistic Emperor to hunt him down and kill him.

3. A Reaper at the Gates

The Escalation: The war is no longer just between humans. The Nightbringer—an ancient, vengeful being—is gathering power to destroy the world.

The Transformation: As the Empire teeters on the edge of collapse, Elias must pay a terrible price to protect the "Waiting Place" (the bridge between life and death), while Laia searches for a way to stop the impending supernatural apocalypse.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tahir grew up in her family’s eighteen-room motel in California's Mojave Desert. She was inspired to write the series while working as an editor at The Washington Post, where she read stories about international human rights abuses, which heavily influenced the themes of oppression and resistance in her books.
