About the Book
"Coins of North India (500-1200 AD): A Comprehensive Study on Indo-Sassanian Coins" is a book by Premlata Pokharna that provides a detailed study of coins from the period, focusing on Indo-Sassanian coins. The book offers a systematic survey of coins and coin hoards found in various Indian museums, analyzing their origin, distribution, and numismatic details. It highlights a key discovery about the origin of these coins in the Aravali region of Rajasthan, which led to the development of two distinct regional coin series.
A comprehensive and systematic survey of coins and coin hoards lying in different museums all over India is given in this book. More than sixty coin hoards and a number of stray finds were studied in detail. The origin, track, circulation, and numismatic details were recorded.
Studies reveal that the Aravali system is the origin of these coins where two series of coins were introduced. One at Sakhun near Sambhar and the other at Kakarwa near Chittorgarh or Ahore near Jalore in Rajasthan which ultimately formed two empires, one in the East of Aravali up to Banaras and the other in the West of Aravali up to Sindh and Maharashtra respectively. This is a landmark discovery in the history of the numismatic world that removes all dogmas and beliefs about the Indo-Sassanian Coins.
