ABOUT THE BOOK
Dilip Kumar (Yusuf Khan), who began his career as a novice in Hindi cinema in the 1940s, reached the pinnacle of stardom in a very short time. Throughout his 60-year film career, he delivered mesmerizing performances in one hit film after another, using his creative talent, determination, hard work, and unique style. His imitators are countless, but the true hero is the one who truly enjoyed his time.
This unique book chronicles Dilip Kumar's life journey from birth to the present. In the process, he candidly details his interactions and relationships with a wide variety of people, including not only family members but also those associated with the film world and politicians. He feels that much of what has been written about him is false and misleading. He vividly describes how he married Saira Banu, a fairy tale.
Dilip Kumar recounts the event that changed his life: meeting Devika Rani of Bombay Talkies and being invited to act in a film. Her film was "Jwar Bhata" (1944). He elaborates on the learning curve and how he developed an acting style that set him apart from his contemporaries. Subsequently, his stature grew with films like "Jugnu," "Shaheed," "Mela," "Andaz," "Deedar," "Daag," and "Devdas." In these films, he increasingly played the role of a "tragedian," which adversely affected his mental state. He consulted a British psychiatrist, who advised him to pursue comedic roles. In addition to the films "Azad" and "Kohinoor," his comic performance in "Naye Daur" was impressive. He then played serious and heartwarming roles in numerous films, including "Ganga Jamuna," "Leader," "Dil Diya Dard Liya," "Ram Aur Shyam," "Aadmi," "Sangharsh," "Gopi," "Sagina," and "Bairaag."
He later took a five-year break from films and began his second innings with "Kranti" (1981). Following this, he appeared in numerous hit films, including "Vidhaata," "Shakti," "Mashal," "Karma," "Saudagar," and "Qila."
