ABOUT THE BOOK
The Essential Work of Dharampal is a monumental 5-volume collection that fundamentally challenged the colonial narrative of "Pre-British" India. Through decades of meticulous research in British archives, Dharampal unearthed primary documents—surveys, reports, and letters written by British officials in the 18th and 19th centuries—that revealed a highly sophisticated, indigenous Indian society.
The collection shatters the myth that India was "backward" before colonial intervention. Instead, it paints a picture of a nation with a thriving indigenous education system, advanced metallurgical and agricultural techniques, and a decentralized, self-sustaining political structure.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dharampal (1922–2006) was a renowned Gandhian thinker, historian, and political philosopher. During the Quit India Movement, he was deeply inspired by the idea of Indian self-rule. Dissatisfied with Eurocentric histories of India, he spent years in London’s British Library and the India Office Library. His work is unique because he used the British's own records to prove the efficacy of the Indian systems they eventually dismantled. He is often credited with providing the "intellectual ammunition" for the decolonial movement in India.
