ABOUT THE BOOK
Foundations of Electromagnetic Theory is a rigorous textbook covering the fundamentals and advanced topics in electricity and magnetism. It presents topics like vector analysis, electrostatics, magnetic fields, Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic waves, induction, and more, with mathematical depth. The fourth edition includes many worked examples and problem sets, more emphasis on electromagnetic wave propagation, and methods using computers for solving numerical problems. It also covers specialized topics such as the electromagnetic properties of superconductors, plasmas, and dispersion in media. This text is used widely in upper undergraduate or beginning graduate courses in physics or electrical engineering.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John R. Reitz
- John Richard Reitz (1923–2014) was an American theoretical physicist.
- He earned his PhD in physics from the University of Chicago in 1949, under the supervision of Edward Teller.
- Early in his career, he worked at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, contributing to material physics and solid-state research.
- Later, he joined the faculty of Case Institute of Technology, and then moved to industry — in 1964 he became manager of the Physics Department at Ford’s research laboratory.
Frederick J. Milford
- Frederick John Milford (1926–2019) was a physicist known for his work in theoretical and applied physics.
- He earned his PhD in theoretical physics around 1952 after doing earlier work in Cleveland and Boston.
- Milford served on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University (formerly Case Institute of Technology) until about 1959.
- After leaving academia, he worked at Battelle Memorial Institute, rising to leadership and research roles there until his retirement.
Robert W. Christy
- Robert Frederick Christy (1916–2012) was a prominent Canadian-American theoretical physicist and astrophysicist.
- He received his PhD in 1941 at the University of California, Berkeley, under J. Robert Oppenheimer.
- Christy was heavily involved in the Manhattan Project; he is credited with designing a practical “solid-core” plutonium implosion configuration (the “Christy pit”) used in the atomic bombs.
- After the war, he joined the faculty at Caltech, where he held many roles including provost and acting president.
- He later turned to astrophysics, in particular stellar pulsation theory (e.g. modeling variable stars), work for which he received the Eddington Medal in 1967.
