ABOUT THE BOOK
Gita Govinda: Meditations on Sri Jayadeva by Sudarshan R. Iyangar is a contemporary and deeply spiritual exploration of the 12th-century lyrical masterpiece, Gita Govinda. While many scholars approach Jayadeva’s work as purely literary or erotic poetry, Iyangar treats it as a manual for Madhurya Bhakti (the path of divine love).
The book serves as a bridge between the complex Sanskrit imagery of the original and the modern seeker’s need for practical meditation. It breaks down the 24 Ashtapadis (eight-step hymns) to show that the relationship between Radha and Krishna is actually a metaphor for the individual soul's (Jivatma) longing for the Supreme Soul (Paramatma).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jayadeva Gosvami (c. 1200 AD) was the court poet of King Lakshmana Sena of Bengal. He is immortalized for the Gita Govinda, a work so potent that it is said Lord Jagannath Himself listens to it daily at the Puri temple. Jayadeva’s poetry revolutionized the Bhakti movement by placing Srimati Radharani at the center of the divine narrative, emphasizing that even the Supreme Godhead is "conquered" by pure, selfless love.
