ABOUT THE BOOK
Global Advances in Tea Science, edited by the distinguished agricultural scientist Dr. N. K. Jain and published in 1999 by Aravali Books International, is a monumental, comprehensive compendium of research in the field of plantation science and agronomy. Spanning nearly 900 pages, this authoritative volume compiles state-of-the-art reviews and breakthrough studies contributed by leading international authorities on tea cultivation, processing, and biochemistry.
The primary objective of the book is to bridge traditional plantation management with modern biotechnological innovations. It offers a global perspective on Camellia sinensis, addressing the persistent challenges faced by tea planners, agronomists, and corporate producers across major tea-growing nations. The text systematically covers a vast array of technical subjects, including advanced crop production, integrated pest management, soil nutrient optimization, and the molecular mechanisms that dictate tea quality and flavor profile development.
Beyond field agronomy, the volume delves deeply into the industrial and medical horizons of the crop. It details the manufacturing technologies behind diverse varieties—such as black, green, and instant tea—while pioneering scholarly space for exploring the pharmacological and protective effects of tea polyphenols on human health. Designed as an operational and academic blueprint, the book functions as an invaluable mine of information for research institutions, agricultural universities, and policymakers looking to enhance global tea productivity and sustainability.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Narendra Kumar Jain (born 1934) is an eminent Indian crop scientist, agronomist, and institutional builder with a decorated academic background, including a PhD in Crop Production from the University of Illinois. Over a long career, he has established himself as a definitive authority on plantation economies, notably serving for twelve years as the Director of the historic Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Jorhat, Assam—the oldest and largest tea research station in the world—where his R&D initiatives vastly optimized the industry's cost-benefit efficiency.
Dr. Jain’s scientific contributions extend to founding the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, an institution that dramatically elevated local tea productivity and biotechnology applications. A consultant to the Government of India's Department of Biotechnology, the Tea Board, and elite corporate entities like the Goodricke Group, his lifelong dedication to organizing applied and fundamental research has transformed the operational dynamics of the South Asian tea industry.
