ABOUT THE BOOK
Hari Bhakti Vilasa, compiled by the revered saint Srila Sanatana Gosvami based on the extensive notes collected by Srila Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, stands as the definitive, foundational law book and behavioral compendium for the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Published across three extensive volumes by premier spiritual institutions such as Rasbihari Lal & Sons and Touchstone Media, this monumental Sanskrit-to-English translation details the sacred daily rituals and ethical codes of the lineage. The core philosophy of this text is that genuine spiritual devotion (Bhakti) cannot exist in a vacuum of whimsical practice; instead, it must be anchored by a structured, purified lifestyle (Sadachara) that transforms every routine physical action into a conscious act of loving surrender to Lord Krishna.
The text is structurally arranged into twenty chapters known as Vilasas, which systematically cover the entire spectrum of a practitioner's daily, monthly, and lifelong spiritual duties. The translation flawlessly balances thousands of classical scriptural citations from the Puranas, Samhitas, and Agamas to build an unshakeable framework for daily life. The compilation leaves no detail unexamined, meticulously charting out the fine mechanics of spiritual initiation (Diksha), the chanting of holy mantras, and strict morning cleanliness routines. It details the precise methods for choosing sacred Tulasi beads, constructing altars, executing advanced deity worship (Archana), and marking the body with sacred clay signs (Tilaka). Furthermore, the volumes provide the absolute astronomical and theological standard for observing sacred fasts like Ekadashi and celebrating major cyclic festivals like Janmashtami, ensuring that practitioners preserve the pure, untainted lineage standards established by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Srila Sanatana Gosvami (1488–1558) was an elite philosopher, ascetic, and the senior-most member of the historic Six Gosvamis of Vrindavan. Before renouncing his worldly position to become a prime disciple of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he held the powerful post of prime minister in the royal court of the Sultan of Bengal, Alauddin Husain Shah.
Sanatana Gosvami’s compilation and instructional style is profoundly authoritative, compassionate, and micro-detailed. He acts as an ultimate spiritual architect who codifies complex, scattered ancient traditions into a clear, unified, and practical code of conduct for common humanity. His extensive literary footprint—which includes other monumental masterpieces like the Brihad-bhagavatamrita and the Krishna-lila-stava—remains the eternal, guiding light for orthodox Vaishnava theology, temple administration, and devotional mysticism across the globe.
