Book Description
Preface
In recent years, the in-depth study of Regional History has become a prominent trend in historical research. While the nineteenth century saw a few isolated attempts to illuminate the history and culture of Orissa, many of these efforts lacked objectivity. However, over the last three decades, significant strides have been made to examine the various facets of Orissa's history with a more analytical and impartial approach. My previous works—Orissa under the British Crown: 1855-1905, History of Education in Orissa: 1905-1936, Administrative History of Orissa: 1866-1912, and Princely States of Orissa: 1905-1947—reflect years of diligent research and contribute substantially to both historical scholarship and emerging trends in the field.
The materials compiled in these works serve as the foundation for this book, History of Modern Orissa. This text offers a coherent, compact, and analytical exploration of modern Orissa across its diverse dimensions. Prior to this, there was a notable lack of research-driven literature on the modern history of Orissa. This book stands out as a pioneering effort to deliver an authentic and accessible account of the subject while minimizing excessive scholarly jargon.
Moreover, the scarcity of textbooks on the History of Modern Orissa has posed challenges for students at both the B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. levels. Existing resources often fall short in providing comprehensive and engaging content. Thus, it has become essential to produce a balanced, informative, and captivating narrative. This publication aims to enhance the study of Modern Orissa's history, making it more engaging for students.
It is the author’s hope that this book will not only serve as a foundational text for further exploration but also inspire critical thought and inquiry among readers.
