ABOUT THE BOOK

How to Judge a Horoscope (Volumes 1 and 2) is a definitive, monumental masterpiece on Hindu predictive astrology (Jyotisha), authored by the legendary astrologer Dr. B. V. Raman. Published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishers, this two-volume set serves as the standard, universally acclaimed textbook for both amateur students and professional practitioners seeking a systematic, reliable method for chart analysis.

The primary objective of the work is to teach the reader how to analyze a birth chart holistically rather than relying on fragmented, isolated planetary permutations. The two volumes are meticulously divided to cover all twelve houses (Bhavas) of a horoscope:

  • Volume 1 (Houses 1 to 6): Focuses heavily on the foundational aspects of life. It covers the First House (body, description, and longevity), followed by detailed chapters on wealth, education, family, siblings, vehicles, maternal relatives, debts, and diseases.
  • Volume 2 (Houses 7 to 12): Authored in collaboration with his daughter, Gayatri Devi Vasudev, this volume tackles the complex relational and external houses. It features extensive analyses of marriage, partnerships, professions, career fluctuations, spiritual inclinations, losses, and liberation (Moksha).

Rather than offering vague, highly abstract predictions, Dr. Raman outlines a clear, step-by-step diagnostic framework. Each house is evaluated through its three core components: the house lord (Bhavesha), the indicators (Karakas), and the planets residing within or aspecting that house. Every chapter is supplemented with actual illustrative horoscopes, clear astronomical data tables, and practical case studies, allowing the reader to observe exactly how planetary strengths and weaknesses manifest in real human lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bangalore Venkata Raman (1912–1998) was an intellectual giant, author, and widely considered the father of modern Vedic astrology. Through his tireless global lecturing, his authorship of over scores of books, and his decades-long editorship of The Astrological Magazine, Dr. Raman single-handedly triggered a global revival in Hindu astrology, rescuing it from superstitious distortions and presenting it as a rational, mathematical science.

Dr. Raman was globally celebrated for his astonishingly accurate mundane astrological predictions, which included foretelling the entry of Japan into World War II, the fall of Adolf Hitler, the partition of India, and the passing of major global statesmen. Holding an honorary Doctor of Letters from Kumaon University and being a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, his writing style is highly regarded for its lucidity, profound philosophical grounding, and absolute technical clarity, leaving behind a timeless legacy that continues to guide generations of astrologers worldwide.
