Guha argues that India’s survival as a single, democratic nation was a "miracle" that defied the predictions of Western political scientists. This volume covers the turbulent years of nation-building, from the trauma of Partition and the integration of princely states to the first general elections and the linguistic reorganization of states.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

Ramachandra Guha is one of India’s most prominent historians and public intellectuals. Known for his "people-centric" approach to history, he uses a vast array of primary sources—letters, diaries, and newspaper archives—to tell a story that is as much about ordinary citizens as it is about leaders like Nehru, Patel, and Ambedkar. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan.
