ABOUT THE BOOK
Life and Experiences of a Bengali Chemist* is the two-volume autobiography of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, one of India’s pioneering chemists, published in 1932 and 1935. It covers not just his personal life and scientific work (his education, research, founding of industries, contributions to chemistry), but also reflections on the social, economic, educational, and political life of Bengal and India under British rule. Ray discusses industrial enterprises, the rise of scientific education, intellectual renaissance in Bengal, and challenges of Indian society such as caste, colonial policies, and rural poverty. The work is more than memoir—it’s also a document of intellectual history and a critique of educational and economic policies of the time. It’s richly detailed, combining lab work, industry setup, personal motivations, and social reform.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Prafulla Chandra Ray was a pioneering **Indian chemist, educator, industrialist, and nationalist, widely regarded as the **father of modern chemistry in India. Born in Raruli, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), he studied in Kolkata and later at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned his Doctorate in Chemistry.
He founded **Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals**, India’s first indigenous chemical manufacturing company, in 1901—promoting self-reliance long before independence. Ray was also a professor at Presidency College**, inspiring a generation of Indian scientists. Beyond chemistry, he was a passionate **social reformer and advocate of scientific temper, writing on education, nationalism, and economic self-sufficiency.
His autobiography Life and Experiences of a Bengali Chemist* reveals not only his scientific achievements but also his deep concern for India’s cultural and social upliftment.
