ABOUT THE BOOK
Light on Life is the crowning achievement of B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the most influential yoga masters of the 20th century. While his earlier classic, Light on Yoga, focused on the physical discipline of asanas, this book serves as a spiritual map for the inner journey. Iyengar explores how yoga can be used as a tool to navigate the "five layers" of the human being—the physical, emotional, mental, intellectual, and spiritual bodies. He argues that yoga is not just about flexibility of the limbs, but about the "wholeness" of the person, seeking to bring the light of awareness into every dark corner of the self.
Written in his late eighties, the book is infused with a lifetime of wisdom, blending autobiography with profound philosophical insights. Iyengar addresses universal human struggles—stress, fear, and the search for meaning—and offers yoga as a practical science for achieving "Ultimate Freedom." He emphasizes that the path to the soul begins with the body, famously stating, "The body is my temple, and asanas are my prayers." It is an essential read for anyone looking to understand yoga as a holistic lifestyle rather than a mere exercise routine.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014) was the founder of "Iyengar Yoga" and is widely credited with bringing yoga to the Western world. Born into a poor family and struggling with multiple illnesses in his youth, he turned to yoga for health, eventually becoming the most celebrated teacher of his era. He was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine and received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award. His rigorous, precision-based approach to alignment and his invention of "yoga props" (like blocks and straps) made yoga accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities.
