ABOUT THE BOOK
Mera Bhai (originally written in English as My Brother, and widely read in its Urdu translation), authored by the revered Madar-e-Millat (Mother of the Nation) Fatima Jinnah, is an extraordinarily intimate, poignant, and historically invaluable biographical memoir. Written in the mid-1950s but officially published posthumously in 1987 by the Quaid-i-Azam Academy, this book serves as a rare, deeply personal window into the private life, vulnerabilities, and steel-willed determination of her elder brother, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.
The primary objective of the memoir is to rescue the persona of Muhammad Ali Jinnah from the detached, clinical definitions of standard political textbooks. Fatima Jinnah, who stood as his closest confidante, advisor, and caregiver for decades, presents a humanized portrait of a leader often perceived as stoic and austere. The narrative flows gracefully across key chronological phases:
- The Formative Childhood: Details Jinnah's early years in Karachi and Bombay, his unique childhood habits, and the deep-seated family values that laid the foundation for his uncompromising integrity.
- The Lonely Journey in London: Reconstructs his student life at Lincoln's Inn, exploring how a young, solitary Indian student navigated the challenges of late-Victorian London while honing his legal and political philosophies.
- The Transition to Statesman: Offers a fascinating, backstage look at the psychological and physical toll of his relentless political battles, detailing how he managed chronic, terminal illness while spearheading the Pakistan Movement.
- The Silent Sacrifices: Highlights the quiet domestic life the siblings shared, illustrating the mutual respect, shared ideals, and deep emotional bond that sustained them through decades of historical turbulence.
Written with a beautiful blend of deep familial love and objective historical responsibility, this memoir remains an absolute masterpiece of Pakistani biographical literature, offering unparalleled insights into the human being behind the geopolitical icon.
