ABOUT THE BOOK
This students' edition brings together two of Tagore’s most profound political and literary works. "Nationalism" is a collection of lectures where Tagore offers a scathing critique of the "Nation-State," arguing that aggressive patriotism often leads to greed and moral blindness. In contrast, "The Home and the World" (Ghare Baire) is a powerful novel set during the 1905 Partition of Bengal, exploring the clash between Western modernity and traditional Indian values. The story follows the introspective Bimala, her noble husband Nikhilesh, and the radical nationalist Sandip, serving as a cautionary tale about the dangers of violent extremism. Together, these texts provide a comprehensive look at Tagore's vision of universal humanism over narrow political interests.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), also known as "Gurudev," was a polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, becoming the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913). He was a poet, philosopher, painter, and the founder of Visva-Bharati University, where he championed an education system based on nature and creativity. Tagore was a central figure in the Indian Renaissance, composing the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh. While he supported Indian independence, he remained a critic of militant nationalism, advocating instead for global brotherhood and the "spiritual unity of man." His work remains a cornerstone of world literature and a testament to the power of intellectual freedom.
