ABOUT THE BOOK
Picturesque India: A Journey in Early Picture Postcards (1896–1947) is a stunning visual history of the Indian subcontinent during the peak and twilight of the British Raj. Authored by the husband-and-wife duo Sangeeta and Ratnesh Mathur, this book is a curated archive of over 500 rare, vintage postcards.
Rather than a dry historical text, the book uses the "postcard" as a lens to view the changing landscapes, urban developments, and social hierarchies of India. It captures the era when the postcard was the world’s primary social media—a way to transmit the "exotic" beauty of India to Europe and across the empire.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sangeeta and Ratnesh Mathur are dedicated collectors and researchers of Indo-European history. Based for many years in the Czech Republic, they spent over two decades scouring European flea markets and auctions to repatriate these forgotten "snapshots" of their homeland. Their work is a labor of love that combines deltiology (the study of postcards) with a passion for preserving the intangible heritage of pre-independence India.
