ABOUT THE BOOK
Principles of Tantra (originally published as Tantra Tattva) is one of the most significant works in the study of Indian esotericism. It is a comprehensive defense and exposition of the Shakta Tantra tradition, edited and translated by Sir John Woodroffe (under the pseudonym Arthur Avalon).
The work is actually a translation of a Bengali treatise by Pandit Jaganmohana Tarkalankara, with extensive introductory notes and commentaries by Woodroffe. Unlike earlier Western scholars who dismissed Tantra as "black magic" or "superstition," Woodroffe presented it as a profound, scientific, and highly structured system of spiritual realization.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sir John Woodroffe (1865–1936) was a British Justice of the High Court of Calcutta. Deeply fascinated by Indian culture, he learned Sanskrit and was initiated into Tantric practice. He is credited with single-handedly rehabilitating the reputation of Tantra in the West and among the English-educated Indian elite.
