ABOUT THE BOOK
Saki: The Complete Stories is the definitive collection of short fiction by Hector Hugh Munro (1870–1916), better known by his pen name Saki. A master of the short story format, Saki is often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker for his razor-sharp wit, macabre irony, and cruel, crystalline elegance.
Writing primarily during the Edwardian era, Saki used his stories to satirize the rigid conventions, hypocrisy, and polite boredom of the English upper class, often introducing a chaotic or supernatural element to shatter their social veneer.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- The Satirist: Born in Burma and raised by strict, puritanical aunts in England (who often served as models for his antagonistic female characters), Munro developed a subversive sense of humor.
- The Soldier: Despite being over the age limit, he enlisted in World War I and was killed by a sniper in 1916. His last recorded words were, "Put that bloody cigarette out!"
- The Legacy: He influenced generations of writers, from A.A. Milne to Roald Dahl, particularly in the art of the "twist ending."
