ABOUT THE BOOK

Shankara and Shanmata (षण्मतः) represents one of the most significant structural reorganizations in the history of classical Hindu theology and congregational worship. Orchestrated by the 8th-century philosopher-saint Adi Shankaracharya, this framework served as a brilliant theological solution to the fragmented, often combative sectarian landscapes of early medieval India. The core philosophy centers on reconciling diverse sectarian traditions through the lens of Advaita Vedanta (Non-Dualism)—proposing that the various personal deities worshipped by different traditions are not rival cosmic entities, but rather distinct, valid manifestations of the one formless, absolute reality known as Brahman.

Before Adi Shankara’s intervention, the religious landscape was deeply fractured. Worshippers of Shiva, Vishnu, and the Divine Mother frequently clashed, each claiming supreme cosmic monopoly for their chosen deity while dismissing others as heretical. Shankara traveled across the Indian subcontinent engaging in philosophical debates (Shastrarithas). Instead of wiping out these regional cults, he purified their practices—stripping away extreme or violent rituals—and unified them into a cooperative, six-fold system of worship known as Shanmata (Six Faiths). This established him as the Shanmata Sthapanacharya (the founder/establisher of the six-fold path).
