ABOUT THE BOOK
Social Justice Philanthropy: Approaches and Strategies of Funding Organizations is a seminal work that critiques the traditional "charity" model and advocates for a more transformative, rights-based approach to giving. Co-authored by three of India’s most influential voices on social equity—Sukhadeo Thorat, Gail Omvedt, and Martin Macwan—the book explores how philanthropic organizations can move beyond temporary "band-aid" solutions to address the root causes of systemic inequality, such as caste, gender, and economic exclusion. It challenges donors to view philanthropy not just as an act of kindness, but as a strategic tool for social justice and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
The book provides a rigorous analysis of the funding patterns and priorities of various national and international agencies. The authors argue that for philanthropy to be truly effective, it must support "social movements" and "capacity building" rather than just providing services. By focusing on the Indian context, specifically the Dalit and Adivasi struggles, the text outlines practical strategies for funding organizations to become more inclusive in their grant-making processes. It is an essential read for NGO leaders, policymakers, and donors who seek to understand how the redistribution of resources can be used to dismantle structures of oppression and build a more democratic society.
