ABOUT THE BOOK
Songs of Milarepa (Dover Thrift Editions) is a curated selection of the most profound and poetic verses from the life of Jetsun Milarepa (c. 1052–1135), Tibet’s most beloved saint and yogi. Known for attaining enlightenment in a single lifetime, Milarepa was a wanderer who lived in remote mountain caves, communicating his realizations through spontaneous spiritual songs (gur).
This edition offers a compact, accessible entry point into the "Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa," focusing on his teachings on detachment, compassion, and the illusory nature of reality.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Milarepa’s life is a legendary story of transformation:
- The Sorcerer: In his youth, he practiced black magic to seek revenge on relatives who cheated his family.
- The Penitent: After realizing the horror of his actions, he sought a spiritual master, Marpa the Translator, who put him through years of grueling physical labor to purify his karma.
- The Yogi: He eventually spent decades in solitary meditation, wearing only a single cotton cloth (hence "Mila-repa," or Mila the cotton-clad) and surviving on nettle soup, which allegedly turned his skin green.
