ABOUT THE BOOK
Sri Brhad Bhagavatamrta (The Great Nectar of the Bhagavatam), originally composed in Sanskrit during the 16th century by Srila Sanatana Gosvami, is a foundational theological masterwork of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. This highly acclaimed three-volume English translation and commentary edition by the late Sanskrit scholar Gopiparanadhana Dasa is published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT). Rooted in ancient Puranic history, the text acts as an analytical companion and structural expansion of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Frame-storied as an ancient discourse spoken by Maharaja Pariksit to his mother, Uttara, just moments before the king's death, the core philosophy of this epic centers on mapping the precise hierarchy of bhakti (devotional service) and defining the ultimate spiritual destination of the soul.
The trilogy is structurally organized into two distinct, sweeping narrative quests across the material and spiritual universes:
- Part One: Sri-bhagavat-krpa-sara-vinirpaya (Finding the Essence of the Lord's Mercy): Follows the cosmic traveler Sage Narada as he journeys through a structural ladder of devotees. He moves from earth-bound kings to Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, Prahlada Maharaja, and Hanuman, with each devotee deflecting praise to someone greater. The analytical progression culminates in Vraja, establishing the Gopis of Vrindavan as the absolute pinnacle of devotional mercy.
- Part Two: Sri-goloka-mahatmya (The Glories of Goloka): Details the allegorical spiritual odyssey of a naive, illiterate cowherd boy named Gopa-kumara. Gifted a sacred mantra by his guru, Gopa-kumara physically travels up the structural layers of the universe—ascending through the material elements, planetary heavens, the liberation of sayujya-mukti, Vaikuntha, Ayodhya, and Dvaraka—finding complete psychological and spiritual fulfillment only upon reaching Goloka Vrindavana.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Srila Sanatana Gosvami (1488–1558) was the senior-most disciple among the celebrated Six Gosvamis of Vrindavan, appointed by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to systematize Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, establish code-compliant devotional practices, and excavate holy heritage sites.
Gopiparanadhana Dasa (1950–2011) was an elite linguist, Sanskrit scholar, and archivist within the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. He was a principal member of the scholarly team that completed the translation of the Srimad-Bhagavatam after the passing of his spiritual master, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.
Gopiparanadhana Dasa’s translational and commentary style is exceptionally rigorous, lucid, and academically sound. Writing with the directness of a specialized Sanskrit grammarian, he provides the original Devanagari verses, romanized transliterations, precise word-for-word synonyms, and smooth English prose. His commentary incorporates Sanatana Gosvami’s own auto-commentary (Dig-darsini), deconstructing dense metaphysical concepts into scannable, logical stages. By balancing profound esoteric theology with structured editorial notes, his multi-volume edition remains an indispensable international gold standard for indologists, academic libraries, and practitioners of Bhakti-yoga worldwide.
