ABOUT THE BOOK
Sri Caitanya-Candrodaya-Nataka (The Play of the Rise of the Chaitanya Moon) is a masterpiece of Sanskrit devotional literature and historical drama. Written in the mid-16th century, this ten-act play provides an extraordinary biographical account of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.
The "Nataka" (drama) is unique because it blends historical reality with allegorical elements. Characters such as Bhakti (Devotion), Adharma (Irreligion), and Kali (the personification of the current dark age) appear alongside the historical associates of Lord Chaitanya. This two-volume set meticulously chronicles the Lord’s early life in Navadvipa, His acceptance of the renounced order (Sannyasa), and His later pastimes in Jagannatha Puri. It is considered one of the most authoritative sources for understanding the theological significance of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s mission and his ecstatic transformations of divine love.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Srila Kavi Karnapura (born c. 1524) was a brilliant poet and saint in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. He was the son of Sivananda Sena, a close associate of Sri Chaitanya. As a young child, he received the special mercy of Lord Chaitanya, who reportedly placed His toe in the boy's mouth, empowering him with extraordinary poetic talent.
Because of this divine empowerment, he became known as Kavi Karnapura ("the ear-ornament of poets"). He was a prolific author, writing other foundational works such as the Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (which identifies the spiritual identities of Chaitanya’s associates) and Ananda-vrindavana-campu. His writings are celebrated for their sophisticated Sanskrit meter, deep emotional resonance (rasa), and theological precision.
