ABOUT THE BOOK
Sri Vidagdha-madhava (The Clever Krishna) is one of the most significant dramatic works in the history of Sanskrit literature. Composed by Srila Rupa Gosvami, this seven-act play captures the complex, "clever," and ecstatic pastimes of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan.
Unlike philosophical treatises, this is a Nataka (drama) intended to evoke Rasa (aesthetic and spiritual rapture). It focuses on the psychological nuances of "Purva-raga" (the initial attraction) and the intense longing of the protagonists. It is considered the sister play to Rupa Gosvami’s other masterpiece, Lalita-madhava.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Srila Rupa Gosvami was the chief architect of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology. In Vidagdha-madhava, he utilizes his mastery of Alankara-shastra (the science of poetic ornamentation) to demonstrate that the highest form of the Divine is not found in awe and reverence (Aisvarya), but in the intimate, sweet, and clever exchanges of love (Madhurya).
Legend has it that Rupa Gosvami originally intended to write one massive play, but upon the instruction of Satyabhama-devi (in a dream) and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he split it into two: one focusing on Vraja (Vidagdha-madhava) and one on Dwaraka (Lalita-madhava).
